Recovery methods

  1. Detect actual file format, regardless of extension.
  2. Inspect ZIP and Office package structure.
  3. Rebuild ZIP central directory from intact local entries if possible.
  4. Repair recoverable Office package metadata and XML references.
  5. Detect mislabeled legacy Word files and prepare a lossless .ASD copy for Word AutoRecover.
  6. Extract legacy Word text as a last resort (original formatting is not retained).
  7. Extract readable content and embedded media when possible.

Important limitations

This tool cannot run Microsoft Word's proprietary AutoRecover engine. The .ASD option preserves the original bytes and prepares the file for a manual Word recovery attempt; renaming does not convert its contents. Legacy Word .doc files with intact OLE structures can be recognized and their text recovered. Legacy Excel/PowerPoint, encrypted, and severely truncated files may not be recoverable.

A structurally repaired file is not guaranteed to open correctly in Office. Always verify the recovered copy. The original file is never modified.
